Fireback Plaques

from Stone Creations

The oldest known fireplaque made of cast iron is in the Musée Lorrain, in France. Bearing the arms of the King of Anjou and listed in the Royal inventory, this plaque was cast in 1460. The original reason for fireplaques was to insulate and protect brickwork and to retain heat. Cast iron is a very good heat conductor.

Fireplaques were considered luxury items and were reserved exclusively for the homes of Lords and Kings. Luckily, this is no longer the case. These Lords and Kings are responsible for the decorative nature of today's plaques. Their insistance on using their coat of arms or those of the King of France explains why we see so many beautiful decorations including the Fleur-de-Lys.

In our modern times, where the fireplace has once again become the heart of many homes, we tend to forget the practical and think only of the aesthetic qualities.

Don't forget that your fireplaque can prolong the life of your fireplace and, long after your fire's embers cease to glow, will emmit a steady gentle heat.

Our foundry in France has been reuniting these three qualities for 4 generations now in their plaques: hand-made by artisans, well-versed in the skills of this ancient craft.

We hope that our rich collection of models will enable you to find just the right complement for your home.

Easy to install...regardless of fireplace contour.

In most cases, there is no installation" required" for a fireback. You simply set the fireback on the floor of the fireplace and then lean it against the back wall of the the fireplace. For proper airflow and to prevent the fireback from falling forward, set a couple of small bricks between the bottom of the fireback and the wall.

A fireback can easily be anchored to the wall with steel anchors and angle bolts. This is sometimes necessary with larger firebacks for additional security or if the backwall of your fireplace slants forward. If the fireback is to be anchored to the wall, make sure to use spacers between the fireback and wall to allow for expansion and airflow.
